Jerzy Grotowski was born in Poland during the Second World War. His family was split up during this period; his father was fighting the war in England. Grotowski was influenced by Stanislavski and studied in Moscow. He was a socialist and this is clear in his work.  He was a theatre director and is most famous for his theories of the "theatre laboratory" and "poor theatre".
